Mental Wellbeing Workshop☺️💙

5 Oct 2023

In the hustle and bustle of academic life, it's easy to forget to take care of oneself. Recognizing the importance of mental wellbeing, the Melbourne Population and Global Health Students’ Society recently organised a meaningful event, a Mental Wellbeing Workshop. Thanks to a generous $5,000 grant and the dedication of a passionate team, this event was a huge success.

A Night of Self-Care and Wellbeing

Held on Thursday 5th October, the workshop drew over 70 students from the University of Melbourne’s postgraduate community. The turnout itself was a testament to the pressing need for wellbeing-related activities in the lives of postgraduate university students.

The evening was filled with uplifting activities aimed at fostering self-care and mental wellbeing:

🌱 A Presentation on Self-Care and Cultivating Wellbeing: Rachel Liang, our school’s Health & Wellbeing Practitioner, delivered an insightful presentation. She shared valuable insights and practical tips on self-care, emphasizing the importance of nurturing one's mental health. Download the presentation slides here:

📖 A Mental Wellbeing Workbook: Our dedicated team created a comprehensive Mental Wellbeing Workbook. This resource is designed to guide students on their journey to improved mental health and accompany the items in the Self-Care kits with instructions and meditation suggestions. A digital copy can be accessed here:

🎁 Customizable Self-Care Gift Boxes: Attendees received the opportunity to create a self-care gift box. These boxes were thoughtfully curated with items that served as reminders to prioritize one's wellbeing. Items included tea, chocolate, sensory balls, play doh, candles and potted plant kits for flowers and herbs. It was a tangible gesture that encouraged students to take time for themselves. We also asked students to contribute to these mindful posters before selecting their items for their gift boxes.

🤗 A Positive Affirmations Board: Strive Student Health Initiative added an interactive touch with their positive affirmations board. Students had the opportunity to engage in self-reflection and tune into their creativity.

🎲 Board Games and Social Activities: The evening wasn't just about learning; it was about building connections and having fun. Board games, social activities and delicious food created an atmosphere of camaraderie and relaxation.

Looking Ahead

The success of the Mental Wellbeing Workshop underscored a demand for more wellbeing-related activities within the postgraduate student community. The MPGHSS looks forward to organizing similar events in the future.
